ADVENTURER. LEADER. STORYTELLER.
Director
Artistic Statement
As an artist, my aspiration is to "tell a beautiful story" through everything that I do. I focus on using the arts as a way to foster cultural understanding, bring communities together, and to celebrate stories that art, music, and theatre allow us to share with people all over the world. Theatre is one of the most personal forms of education someone can experience, and I believe that there is a lesson to be learned through every story that is shared on a stage. Whether it is something on-the-nose in a historical drama or a hidden message within an absurdist comedy, everyone should learn something not just academically, but about themselves and the world we live in while at the theatre.
I am passionate about making theatre accessible and available to as many people as possible, and sharing stories from cultures all over the world. Theatre has the ability to transport you to another time, another world. It is my responsibility as a director to make sure that the stories I am guiding my actors and the audience through are told authentically and respectfully, as this might be the only interaction an actor or audience member has with this particular topic, idea, or culture.
Although I believe that we as artists have a serious responsibility in our work, I do not believe that our work has to be all work, no play. I am an enthusiastic storyteller and strive to create a positive environment wherever I am working. As a self-proclaimed, realistic optimist, I am going to find the good but still understand and recognize the cards that have been dealt in every situation I face.
I am as much inspired by my community as I am by people halfway across the world who I do not know and cannot understand. I am inspired by adventure. I am inspired by adversity. I am inspired by the dreamers, the pragmatists, the creators, and the complacent. I am inspired by the things I cannot understand and by those which I do. But most importantly, I am inspired by the stories of others. And what a beautiful thing it is that there are so many stories waiting to be told.
