This semester I have had the pleasure of directing an incredibly talented group of individuals through Alpha Psi Omega's student direction opportunity. Heavily inspired by Broadway Backwards, I designed an entirely virtual production where students were able to work on pieces traditionally played by characters of the opposite gender. My goal was to give my classmates an opportunity to explore these character's stories without looking at it through a gendered lense, and realize that a lot of stories shared within musical theatre are relatable to everyone, regardless of their gender.
Students proposed their own pieces, which I then workshopped with them throughout the duration of the semester. At the end of the semester, students then submitted their final recordings and the production was edited together to make for a wonderful, Broadway-filled evening!
I would like to thank Alpha Psi Omega's Alpha Kappa cast for trusting me with this process, and I would like to thank my dedicated cast for all of their hardwork and patience as we navigated what it was like to create theatre virtually during the pandemic.
